How it started
Mama’s Breakfast started when our mama, Maria Lianou prepared the morning’s rice pudding (rizogalo) for guests.
Mama Maria wanted the dining area to smell like sweet cinnamon when guests walked in.
Soon it wasn’t just rice pudding that mama made for our guests, but a variety of tarts, pies and desserts.
Today, this concept and philosophy of preparing our favorite Greek homestyle recipes and morning dishes and delights for our guests continues.
Our morning buffet is inspired by the traditional Greek mother who will not rest until you enjoy every bit of what she has prepared.
What’s included in Hotel Grotta’s Mama’s Breakfast?
In one word - everything! All guests get to enjoy (what we like to think is) an amazing breakfast. With an impressive assortment of local and popular breakfast items, you might even call it brunch, albeit without the mimosas! :)
Savory and sweet, decadent and healthy, locally produced and home-baked, Mama’s Breakfast — made on the premises daily — features seasonal recipes for all tastes.
Delicious jams and marmalades such as tomato, apricot and fig; Naxos potato omelette topped with fresh mountain oregano; and Naxos’s fried eggs specialty made with tomato sauce and spinach, to name a few.
Based on the foods and ingredients of the Mediterranean and Naxian diet, we do our best to assure that the choices satisfy dietary preferences and/or restrictions including gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, vegetarian, meat, fish and poultry, too. For vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free dishes and products, and food allergies, please do let us know in advance, preferably at your time of booking.
Fruit and herb-infused waters, juice, tea and coffees of choice complete the morning dining experience that opens at 7:00 am and ends at 10:00 am.
And that view!
With all the talk of gastronomic wonder, we almost forgot to mention that guests enjoy their morning meal in Hotel Grotta’s fresh, airy dining room.
The space, decorated in pastel shades of blue, white and grey, is wall-to-wall windows on the Aegean.
Perched atop Grotta hill, the spacious dining area, drenched with light, captivates with breathtaking panoramic views of Chora;
Portara, the magnificent Temple of Apollo standing tall on the islet of Palatia; and surrounding islands on the horizon.
The popular al fresco dining tables are a premium spot, especially in the summer months.
Morning risers will see the ships and sailboats heading to the port in the distance and trekkers setting off to explore Naxos.
